Zero-Knowledge File Encryption, Secure Sharing and Password Management

AxCrypt AB is a Swedish vendor of file-level encryption software aimed at individuals, small teams and organisations that need to protect documents wherever they happen to be stored. The company traces its product line back roughly 25 years to an open-source Windows encryption utility, and now reports more than 20 million downloads across some 160 countries. Named customer sectors include technology, education, financial services, legal, healthcare and government.

Files are protected with AES-256 in counter mode, with HMAC-SHA512 for integrity and PBKDF2 using HMAC-512 for password-based key derivation; key wrapping follows the NIST AES Key Wrap standard with a dynamic iteration count. Each account also holds a 4096-bit RSA key pair. The public half sits on the vendor's servers so a sender can encrypt to a recipient's email address, while the private half stays sealed under that user's own password. Encrypted files continue to work inside synced Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox or iCloud folders.

A publicly inspectable codebase is the main trust argument, with the vendor inviting review of the source for errors, omissions or back doors. Clients span Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, and a password manager, secured vault, text encryption and end-to-end encrypted messenger sit alongside the core file tooling. The Business tier adds a master key for recovery when staff leave, group key sharing, audit logs and an admin role aimed at GDPR, HIPAA and NIS2 obligations.
