
Quantum-Safe, Data-Centric File Encryption and Access Right Management
APF Technologies is a Chicago-based data security company built around the premise stated in its own name, Always Protect Files. It was founded and is led by CEO Jun Yu, who brings roughly two decades of information security and data analytics work at organizations including Motorola and HP Enterprise, and the company operates out of the 1871 startup incubator. Its Universal Data Shield product targets enterprises that must keep regulated information protected under frameworks such as GDPR and HIPAA.
The platform is delivered as a cloud-native SaaS service paired with a lightweight client application installed on end devices. Files are encrypted as soon as they are discovered and converted into a proprietary APFX format, with each file assigned a unique, maximum-length random symmetric key instead of asymmetric cryptography that quantum computing would eventually undermine. Keys and access-control metadata are never attached to the protected file; they sit in a patented cloud key-management layer. Opening a file triggers a permission request that the cloud verifies against policy before decryption is released to the intended application.
What separates this from storage-level or network-segment controls is that the protection travels with the file, so no unprotected clear copy is left behind when data moves to a new device. Authorization is evaluated for every file and every request in real time, with logging of access attempts used to establish accountability after an incident, and the same controls are positioned as a defense against training-data poisoning in AI systems. Marketing leans heavily on NSA guidance calling for data-centric security, framing the product as extending Zero Trust principles rather than replacing them.
