Federally Chartered Digital Asset Bank and Institutional Crypto Custody Platform
Anchorage Digital serves institutions that need to hold and move digital assets under a regulated framework — asset managers, ETF issuers, hedge funds, protocols, corporations and public-sector entities. Security engineers Diogo Monica and Nathan McCauley founded the company in San Francisco in 2017, and in January 2021 its banking subsidiary became the first federally chartered crypto bank in the United States, supervised by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.
The platform consolidates custody, trading, staking, token management and settlement into a single integrated stack rather than a set of disconnected venues and wallets. Private keys are generated and held in HSM-secured cold storage designed to remove single points of failure and direct key exposure, while transactions are authorized through biometric approvals that operate around the clock instead of manual, business-hours signing. Client holdings are kept segregated and bankruptcy-remote, and internal controls are evidenced by SOC 1 and SOC 2 Type II audits.
Regulatory standing is the primary differentiator: a federal OCC bank charter, SEC-qualified custodian status, a New York BitLicense and a Major Payment Institution license in Singapore let the firm serve clients that cannot use offshore or unregulated venues. Adjacent products extend the footprint: the Atlas settlement network, banking and wealth services with USD accounts and ACH, stablecoin issuance and tokenized deposits, plus the non-custodial Porto wallet offered through a separate Anchorage Innovations entity. Backers include Andreessen Horowitz, Goldman Sachs, KKR and Visa.
