Autonomous Data Discovery, Dollar-Value Risk Scoring and File-Level Encryption

Founded in 2017 by Guy Bavly and Assaf Litai, Actifile sells a data security platform aimed at managed service providers and the lean IT teams they support. The company, headquartered in San Francisco and led by CEO Dan Hochberg, targets organizations in healthcare, finance, education and defense that hold regulated data but have no dedicated security staff. Litai previously co-founded PortAuthority, an information security vendor later acquired by Websense, and the founders built Actifile around the view that conventional DLP left data in motion unaccounted for.

The platform deploys lightweight agents to Windows, macOS and Linux workstations, to Windows and Linux servers, and connects to cloud repositories such as Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace through API connectors. A component the company calls the Sentry scans continuously for data at rest against templated or custom patterns, flagging PII, CUI and intellectual property without integrating into applications. It then tracks file creation, download and copy activity, and applies AES-256 encryption through the operating system's own cryptographic libraries so protection travels with the file.

What separates the approach from access-control tooling is quantification: each category of discovered data is scored in monetary terms using FAIR-style loss modelling, so administrators see dollar exposure by file type and location rather than a count of policy violations. Remediation is a single action taken at the risk level, encrypting every matching file at once with FIPS-validated ciphers and no password prompt for authorized users. The company positions deliberately against Microsoft Purview, classic DLP and DSPM suites, with compliance mapping for HIPAA, GDPR and CMMC.
