Qualified Electronic Signatures and ID Austria Digital Identity
A-Trust GmbH is an Austrian qualified trust service provider, registered in Vienna in 2000 and supervised by RTR, the Austrian regulatory authority for broadcasting and telecommunications. It issues qualified certificates and signature services to three groups: private individuals signing documents, companies automating document workflows, and public sector bodies that need strong authentication for citizen-facing services. More than four million people hold an A-Trust qualified electronic signature, making the company the Austrian market leader in that category.
The core service creates qualified electronic signatures, the eIDAS tier legally equivalent to a handwritten signature across the European Union. For individuals this runs through ID Austria, the national electronic identity scheme, and xIDENTITY, both successors to the older Handy-Signatur that bound a signature to a mobile phone. For organizations, Signatur-Box provides a server-side signing appliance and Hash2Sign handles signing at the hash level, joined by timestamping and long-term validation so signatures remain verifiable after certificates expire.
A-Trust also issues qualified and advanced electronic seals for legal entities, identity cards for government and municipal use, and the certificates Austrian cash register systems require under the RKSV anti-fraud rules. Signatures integrate with Adobe Acrobat Sign, DocuSign, and the MOXIS signing platform, and free tools let recipients verify signed PDFs. The company is conformity assessed under Article 20 of the eIDAS Regulation and operates a wholly owned German subsidiary in Moenchengladbach.
